What is the cure for spiritual dullness, and how do we grow in truly knowing Christ?

In John 4:1–6, Jesus leaves Judea and begins His journey through Samaria, setting the stage for His remarkable conversation with the woman at the well. But Pastor Jason Jarvis shows that this passage connects to a much larger theme running throughout the Gospel of John: Jesus Christ, the Light of the world, has come to overcome our spiritual darkness through His death and give us abundant, everlasting life.

Both Nicodemus and the woman at the well encounter Jesus while struggling to understand who He truly is. Nicodemus sees Him as a teacher. The Samaritan woman initially sees Him simply as a Jewish man, and later, perhaps a prophet. Both illustrate the spiritual dullness John describes when he writes that “the light shines in the darkness.” Yet Jesus patiently reveals something far greater: He is not merely another teacher, prophet, or religious leader. He is God in the flesh – the One who came to die, rise again, and give living water to spiritually thirsty people.

The answer to spiritual dullness, whether for the unbeliever encountering Christ for the first time or the believer longing to grow, is the same: look to Christ, believe His Word, depend upon His Spirit, and grow in the knowledge of the One who died and rose again to give us life.
